Vanilla Cake Recipe

This basic Vanilla Cake recipe is the perfect base for all your cake needs.

A simple vanilla cake recipe that is perfect for beginners as well as a versatile option for experienced bakers. This is a cake recipe that works wonderfully for birthdays, special occasions or family gatherings.

Vanilla Cake Recipe


  • 200g(7.05oz) unsalted butter( room temperature) or margarine

  • 200g (7.05oz)sugar

  • 40ml(1.40oz)vegetable oil

  • 30ml(1.01oz) water

  • 4 medium eggs, room temperature

  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

  • pinch of salt

  • 310g(10.58oz) self-raising flour sifted /plain flour with 4tsp of baking powder sifted


  1. Heat the oven to 180°C (gas mark 4). Lightly grease a 16cm (6in) round cake tin with a little extra butter or margarine and cut a piece of greaseproof paper or non-stick baking parchment to fit the base of the tin.

  2. Place the butter/margarine, sugar, salt in the mixing bowl and beat with a whisk or mixer until the sugar starts melting.

  3. Add the oil, water and vanilla essence all at once. Give it a stir, then add the eggs and mix until combined.

  4. To avoid lumps add the flour slowly, preferably 1tbsp at a time.

  5. Pour the mixture into the tins( with this recipe is enough to make 3 big layers or 4 smaller ones); smooth the top and bake in the middle shelf of the oven for 22-25min. The cake is cooked when it looks well risen and gold or when a skewer come clean from the centre of the cake.

  6. Let the cake sit in the tin for 5 minutes, then gently run a knife around the edge and turn it out onto a wire rack to cool. Serve with your favourite cake filling.

Vanilla Buttercream Recipe

Ingredients (to fill and ice the cake)

  • 350g unsalted butter room temperature.

  • 700 icing sugar

  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract


Place all ingredients in one bowl and mix until the sugar is fully combined and dissolved, the mixture becomes fully and has changed colour to almost white.
